Flying Robot Summary

The article “How Flying Robots Might Prevent Deforestation” (2012) mentioned the purpose, features and effectiveness of quadrotors, mainly focused on them being “sentinels of crucial environmental protection”. These “miniature flying robots” were programmed to inspect the surroundings of the rainforest independently, providing advanced feedback for unlicensed activities and largely diminishing the desire of those people who considered carrying out unlawful acts. The article highlighted the robots’ ability to efficiently function together as a team without a need for any communication. Furthermore, quadrotors were equipped with “little rotor blades'' for easy gliding action, and the programmed commands on the “onboard processor” would call for immediate response to any difference in their surroundings. The article claimed that although quadrotors were deemed as valuable bots, we have to be mindful when utilising these robots extensively as there could be a possibility of them ...

Formal Letter

Dear Professor Brad, I am Pua Suan Ting, a student from your effective communication class T6. My purpose of writing this letter is to introduce myself. I studied in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and graduated with a Diploma in Automation and Mechatronics System. During my internship in polytechnic, I found out that the things I have learnt in school were very fundamental and that there were still many things which I did not know. Therefore, I decided to continue my education by studying mechanical engineering in Singapore Institute of Technology in order to equip myself with the necessary knowledge and skills before I go out to work.  My strength in communication is that I am a good listener and I am open to different ideas. During group discussion for projects, I always listen out for the things my groupmates say especially when they are talking about their ideas or challenges faced while they are trying to do their part. I believe that listening to others can help me to lear...

The Importance of communication skills for engineers

“Employers identify communication as one of the basic competencies every graduate should have, asserting that the ability to communicate is valuable for obtaining employment and maintaining successful job performance.” Sherwyn Morreale, Michael Osborn & Judy Pearson, Professors of Communication (2000) My interpretation is communication is an essential skill that is valued by employers. Graduates who are more skillful in communication will have an advantage over others who are also looking for the same job as them. They will also do well in their job as good communication will help them to reduce misunderstandings and conflicts with others.
